When To Seek Emergency Dental Care
While tooth pain or damage to your teeth can be unpleasant and inconvenient, not all cases require immediate dental care. If you are experiencing any of the following, you should call a dentist right away:
- Loose tooth
- Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
- Severe toothache
- Painful cracked tooth
In these instances, urgent care from a dental professional can help to save your natural tooth. Ideally, you should see a dentist within an hour if a tooth has been knocked out or becomes loose. This increases the chance of successful reattachment.
There are some cases where you should see a general dentist as soon as possible, but immediate attention is not necessary. These instances include:
- Lost tooth filling
- Lost dental crown
- Chipped or cracked tooth that does not cause pain
- Mild toothache
If you’re not sure whether you’re experiencing a dental emergency, call our office. A member of our team will walk you through the steps to take and determine if you should come to our office right away.
Types of Sedation
There are several sedation options available. We will help select the right choice for you depending on your specific needs and treatment.
How To Handle Dental Emergencies
Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth
If a tooth has been knocked out, only handle it by the crown. Do not touch the roots, as this could damage them. Place the tooth in a bag or cup of saliva or whole milk to keep the tooth from drying out and see a dentist immediately. Your dentist will attempt to reattach the tooth. If it is unable to be reattached, we can talk about your options for replacing the tooth, such as a bridge or dental implant.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
A tooth can become cracked or broken from trauma, teeth grinding, or biting into something hard. If a piece of your tooth breaks off, rinse the fragment and place it in a cup of milk or saliva to keep it moist. Apply gauze to the area if there is bleeding and use an ice pack to minimize pain. Call Symphony Dental Studio, and we will schedule a time for you to come into the office for treatment.
Lost Tooth Filling or Dental Crown
If a tooth filling or dental crown falls out, keep any part of it you can find in a safe place and bring it to your dentist. Without a filling or crown, you may notice greater tooth sensitivity or pain. Try to manage this discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications until you can make it to the office. Do not use any type of glue or adhesive to try to reattach the crown. Simply give us a call, and we will instruct you on the next steps to take and schedule an appointment.
